Happy Birthday Nelson Mandela
July 18, 2012 (94th)
"Friends, comrades, and fellow South Africans. I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy, and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands. . ."
--An excerpt from Mandela's address to the people upon his release from prison on February 11, 1990.
The Face of WE - Mandela t-shirt, designed by Lamont Crawley in honor of Nelson Mandela who epitomizes humanty's best. He initially started fighting for freedom and equal rights for black South Africans, then the unification of his country, and through his healing touch he affected the world. There were many who influenced Mandela's life, from those he worked with, fought with and against; to those he love and admire; and to those he stood and spoke for. Likewise, there are many people who have and still aid us in becoming the person we are, whether directly through parenting or guidance, or by emulation and/or inspiration, or even through some kind of spiritual imbuement of another who have walked in similar shoes. We are a reflection of many!
Design Note: The gold name-field on the t-shirt consist of 94 names, of which a significant number are covered
by Mandela's body. This was terribly difficult to decide and it went through several transformations before the final
version. I do realize that some will be upset because certain names are not on the shirt, and will even wonder why
others are. However, the majority of the names I included, I chose as best I could from the perspective of Mandela
(his family, friends, associates, people he admired, some foes, etc.) and South Africa's anti-Apartheid movement.
Nelson Mandela, Human Rights Activist, Lawyer, Nobel Laureate, and former President of South Africa, took a very public stand for basic human rights against a racist govenment system, accused and convicted of charges based on unjust laws, and jailed for 27 years. Within a relatively short period of time upon his release from prison in 1990, Mandela was instrumental along with the then sitting President of South Africa, F.W. de Klerk in finally dismantling Apartheid, for which they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was elected President in 1994, effectively united his countrymen, and still had the audacity to grow to become the most revered and beloved of world leaders.
In his charge to change his world, Mandela employed among many great attributes: relentless faith and belief in his spirituality, humanity and justice; tremendous courage and commitment to stand facing the vicious winds of opposition to his highest values; and an unbending willingness to put aside blame and compliant for the injustices done to him, to treat others as he desires to be treated. Mandela is the inspiration for our "I=WE" Life Coaching™ for Personal Responsibility and Self-Sufficiency provided for men and women in transition from jail and prison.
